We love our new slab roller! He’s portable, strong, and easy to use. Kids in Gods and Monsters have been trying him (his name is Brent) out with great success this week. Above are photos of Brent by himself and Calvin rolling a cyclops tile with him.
Kids in sixth sign-up Gods and Monsters are paying homage to another fine monster- Cyclops. Did you know there were actually three of them? Lightning, Thunder, and Thunderbolt. We have finished making ink prints of them and are now making tiles in our new glorious slab roller. Above is Jameson’s cyclopean vision.
Humanity has made two promises to its children. The first is to prepare a world which accepts them and provides them with opportunities to live, grow, and create in safety. The other is to help them develop their whole beings to the fullest in every respect.
Today we hosted a group of high school students from Opus School in The Netherlands. They visited our morning bird class and we had a great time learning about their school and making bird stickers with them.
PUT A BIRD ON IT! This hilarious skit from the very funny TV show “Portlandia” helped inspire our bird class this year. We all love putting birds on things- yesterday we birded the windows of the Tim Booth Studio with window markers.
Today we created small needle felted birds as an Exploration Day activity. We are into birds and we missed needle felting this year so this seemed a perfect solution. Above is Sean’s small, beautiful bird.
And now we bring you “The Bird Who Loved Pizza” by Shel and Julia. This moving drama features an Oscar worthy performance by the Evil Pizza, (Shel- reminiscent of Robert De Niro in “Raging Bull”), dealing with adversity in the form of a persistent and hungry bird (Julia). The rest of the 23 (!) amazing shadow puppet performances will be seen at a film festival before the end of the school year. Enjoy!
Birds of love and gratitude
Yesterday was the last day of “Put a Bird on It” for this sign-up. We created this joyfull basket of little birds bearing messages for Annemarie Roeper and will be sending them off to her today.

Today our “Put a Bird on It!” class had a visitor, Carmen! She read a shape poem to us, called “Dark Emperor”, about an owl. (bottom photo) We really appreciated her visit!
The previous Friday, we had another visitor. Shannon Howell came and spread her bird love with us! (top photo) She talked about how she can tell different birds apart by their wings, and passed around pictures.
We personally enjoyed making birds out of metal (located outside Jarie’s art room), and “birding” the campus (located…anywhere!).
We both really liked putting birds on things!
